Summer Flicks

Updated: Mar 1

Yes, summer is meant to be spent at the beach or enjoying the warm weather that many have been longing for for months BUT every once in awhile you'll want to stay inside, crank the AC and watch some fun and summer-y films! (or for my case that sounds like the absolute perfect summer day)

Here are some of my personal favorite summer themed films!

The Way Way Back (2013)

This lovely, lovely film is an underrated coming of age gem. As his family spends a happy and fun summer in Cape Cod we see an unhappy Duncan get a job at the local water park where he can finally escape and enjoy himself and l. This film is so special and has not only a phenomenal cast but a wonderful script and story in general.

Dazed and Confused (1993)

This film screams summer & late night drives with friends & this film is just the epitome of fun summer films. We follow these teenagers on their first night of summer when their biggest problem is where can they party. This film has such an authentic feeling that you can't help but feel nostalgic and entranced.

Stand By Me (1986)

I could not make a summer list and not include this film. This film is not only one of my favorite films but also one of the most beautiful and heartwarming stories I have ever seen. These four boys spend their summer days in search of a dead body and in the process learn more about each other and themselves.

The Florida Project (2017)

While watching this film you'll become completely entranced by the bright Florida environment. This film beautifully combines comedy and drama where you'll fall in love with the characters and care for them immensely. I adore this gorgeous film.

The To Do List (2013)

The summer before going to college for the first time can be important for many who want to make sure they are completely prepared. Valedictorian and school focused Brandy (Aubrey Plaza) decides to spend her summer experiencing every sexual encounter she can think of in preparation for college. This film is a hilarious ride.

The Sandlot (1993)

This lovable film will give you all sorts of nostalgia. The film follows a group of baseball loving boys & all the antics they get themselves in whether that be at the pool or at the local carnival. This film has something for everyone and will definitely put you in a summer-y mood.

American Honey (2016)

American Honey follows Star who runs away from her abusive home to join a traveling sales group where she finally feels free and like she belongs somewhere. The film is shot very personally and intimate making this beautiful story unforgettable.

Do The Right Thing (1989)

Do The Right Thing takes place on a hot and sweaty summer day on a street in Brooklyn. This is a film that I believe everyone should see at least once. This film is not only innovate and uses the medium so creatively but it also tells an important story about clashing cultures that occurs in real life to this day.

The Kings of Summer (2013)

This film follows these three boys who decide they want to escape reality and moves into the woods in a treehouse together over the summer. This is the ultimate escapist, adventure coming of age film. They attempt to spend their summer as carefree as possible, isn't that the dream?

Call Me By Your Name (2017)

Summer in Italy with Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer? Sign me up please. This breathtakingly beautiful film shows one of the most sincere love stories I've seen in a long time. The acting, the writing, the cinematography, and so much more make this such a special & must watch film.

Ingrid Goes West (2017)

Instagram makes anyone's life look more exciting and perfect and Ingrid becomes quite obsessed with the perfection and travels to California to basically stalk her favorite Instagrammer. This story becomes dark and twisted very quickly, you'll definitely cringe and enjoy yourself the whole film.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012)

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom is full of adventure and pastel colors, what could be more summer-y? These two young lovers run away together and spend their time on an isolated beach. The gorgeous settings and colors and costumes all create a lovely summer feeling film.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

This perfectly casted and hilariously beautiful film is a summer vacation that anyone with a struggling family could relate to. This film is so well written and so well performed, you will love spending the time with these characters and this outrageous story.

Adventureland (2009)

When I think of summer I think about amusement parks and annoying summer jobs. This film follows James (Jesse Eisenberg) get a summer job at Adventureland where it may seem like the worst job out there but ends up being worthwhile.

The Notebook (2004)

Summer love at it's finest. The Notebook to some is a cheesy romance film but this story is so carefully and genuinely told that it is bound to pull at anyone's heart strings. This is one of my favorite love stories and hey, they fall in love over one summer! Perfect!

Dirty Dancing (1987)

Don't we all want to spend our summer dancing with Patrick Swayze? Dirty Dancing is ultimately an entertaining film that is loved by many. The film not only shows a beautiful relationship but also shows that we are capable of doing anything no matter what people may think.

Almost Famous (2000)

This film is a magical look on William who falls in love with music & spends his time on the road with a band, living his dream & many viewer's dreams. I adore this film & the adventure & love for music that the film depicts. Summer is all about adventure, new experiences & good music & this film has it all.
